No kidding. I suddenly started feeling like I need a hip replacement. That was almost half a lifetime ago for me.

Oh hell yeah.
I just got Mom and Dad’s vinyl collection and I’d really like to play some of ‘em, but the player I got is a Crosley where the turntable wobbles. (Kacey Musgraves skipped! Arrgh.)
Welp. The speakers aren’t the best on some of the louder, newer stuff I picked up
, either.
Any recommendations on an eventual replacement setup if I ever find decent employment? A lot of folks mentioned just hitting up Goodwill for a used turntable, but I’d need good speakers and a pre-amp if it’s not built in, I think. What should I be looking for besides “not a crappy Crosley-style plastic platter?”

Go to your local record store or audio store (there’s probably a fuck ton in Austin, just guessing ) and see if they have any used equipment. I also use my dad’s old setup, so as far as new equipment is concerned I can’t really say.
I f you get a different turntable and speakers also get a stereo and keep it analog. Pre-amps are only if your going analog to digital (which kinda defeats the purpose for sound quality). Then also get the most rigid turntable as possible for you budget, or if shopping used there’s a good chance you’ll have to replace some of the components, the belt and cartridge /needle, so find one that looks like it’s serviceable.
